How Much Does Perlite Cost?

How Much Does Perlite Cost

Perlite is a naturally occurring volcanic glass that has been used in horticulture since the early 1900s. It’s an excellent soil amendment and growing medium because it provides aeration, water retention, drainage, and insulation to plants.

Perlite can be found in many grades depending upon heating and expansion, and all of these traits affect the price. Prices and uses are discussed below.

Fine Grade

Fine grade perlite costs around $10 – $20 for a bag. The fine grade particles can be of any size between 0.00781 to 0.0625 inches, and it has a water holding capacity of 52%. Hence the mineral is used for seeding or rooting plants from the seeds.

Medium

Medium grade perlite costs around $2 – $20 for a bag. Medium particles can be of any size between 0.03125 to 0.125 inches, and it has a water holding capacity of 46%. This type of perlite is used as stand-alone growing media for potted plants or seeds with the help of plant food containing nutrients to promote healthy growth.

Coarse

Coarse perlite costs around $10 – $20 for a bag. The coarse particles can be of any size between 0.0468 to 0.1875 inches, and it has a water holding capacity of 34%. This combination creates an excellent balance in terms of drainage with its high porosity rate that makes sure there are no compacts when planting seeds!

Super Coarse

Super coarse perlite costs between $5 – $20 for a bag. The super coarse particles can be of any size between 0.09375 to 0.25 inches, and it has a water holding capacity that ranges from 19% for those who want less drag during watering or aeration purposes. This combination creates an excellent balance concerning both drainage improvements as well as root growth stimulation.
