REDCO II - Water Conservation with Horti-Perl!
Water conservation is an increasingly important issue throughout the world. This is particulalry true in Southern California where the U.S. Department of Interior suspended Southern California's use of surplus Colorado River water on January 1, 2003 because of the failure to reach an agreement on a Quanitification Settlement Agreement between the federal government and California water agencies. For more information on this, please see the following:
On the left is a picture of fine grade horticultural perlite being tilled into a sandy soil. The fine grade perlite
will provide superior water retention. This project is being completed in the backyard of a home in a desert area
of Southern California. After rototilling is complete, the unwanted tumbleweed roots will be raked out of the soil,
sprinklers will be installed, and an organic media will be added to complete conditioning. Grass will be planted
and the perlite will enable a lush green lawn with minimal watering compared with untreated soil.
