REDCO II - Horti-Perl in action!
Horticultural Perlite is used 'round the world with great success in a number of different applications.
The picture at the right shows the start of a hydroponic greenhouse. Inside the bags is a medium/fine grade perlite.
It's strong capillary attraction for water will automatically draw up nutrient solution at the same rate that
water is used by the plants. Nutrient enriched water is trapped in the tiny irregularities on the surface of
perlite particles where it is available for use by plant roots. The Perlite will also
support the root structure of the plant. The water and nutrient solution in this greenhouse
will be delivered through a drip system. You can see the drip lines laying over the perlite
bags in this photo. This greenhouse, located in Southern California, will eventually be producing high-grade
vegetables and fruits.
Hydroponic systems like this are common throughout Europe. Other areas of the world, including the United States,
are taking a second look at the advantages of hydroponic growing.
On the left is a picture of fine grade horticultural perlite being tilled into a sandy soil. The fine grade perlite
will provide superior water retention. This project is being completed in the backyard of a home in a desert area
of Southern California. After rototilling is complete, the unwanted tumbleweed roots will be raked out of the soil,
sprinklers will be installed, and an organic media will be added to complete conditioning. Grass will be planted
and the perlite will enable a lush green lawn with minimal watering compared with untreated soil.
Below is a close-
up of the tilled soil with perlite.
